Come visit the Bradley Museum during March Break to enjoy Mississauga's annual maple syrup season and Mississauga's own maple syrup festival - Maple Magic! Ever wonder how maple syrup gets from the forest to your breakfast table?
From March 10th to the 18th, and new this year an additional weekend - March 24th and March 25th, 2012, you can come to experience the magic of Maple time! Enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides, as well as pancakes served daily in our Log Cabin, guided tours, kids' crafts, free samples and more. Visit the Sweet Water Camp, a recreated First Nations' campsite where you can learn about the lore and legends surrounding the first discovery of this marvellous sugar water that oozes out of maple trees. Oversized outdoor board games will provide lots of fun for your family. On the weekends soar up into the air in a Forestry Division bucket truck - all this in addition to learning about maple syrup production past and present.
Maple Magic - Saturday and Sunday weekend hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 10th, 11th, 17th, 18th, 24th and 25th. Monday to Friday weekday hours are 12 to 4 p.m., March 12th to 16th.
We will offer a special theme each weekday. Monday March 12th is "Grandparents' Day" so bring your grandkids out for an afternoon of fun. Free Activity Passes to any Mississauga recreation centre will be issued to the first 100 grandparents who come with grandkids in tow! Tuesday March 13th we will be celebrating ‘Earth Day' early, Wednesday March 14th join us for ‘Tell me a Story' with local authors and actors on site reliving a simpler time and local folklore'. Thursday March 15th features ‘Canadian Eh! as we celebrate Canada, and to end the weekday celebrations, Friday March 16th, bring your favourite Teddy and join us as we have activities for young and old Teddies throughout the site. In addition Saturday March 17th will be "Green Day" for St. Patrick's Day so we encourage everyone to come dressed in green and join in on the festivities. Mississauga, ON, October 04, 2011: The Community Foundation of Mississauga will launch Mississauga's Vital Signs at an event to be held at the BMO Room of the Mississauga Living Arts Centre on October 4th, 2011 from 9:00 am to 9:30 am. This will be the first ever Vital Signs report for the city and will be accompanied by the release of information concerning a new granting program called Vital Initiatives.
Vital Signs® is an annual community check-up being conducted by twenty-two community foundations across Canada that measures the vitality of our cities and identifies significant trends in at least ten areas critical to quality of life. Vital Signs is coordinated nationally by Community Foundations of Canada. Each city's report card data is a compilation of numerous research sources, much of it local, that help communities make connections between issues and trends in different areas. The findings are presented in a reader friendly format to make them as accessible as possible.
For example among the report's findings, the following are noted:
• Gap Between Rich and Poor: The Gap is getting wider with one in four Mississauga children now living in poverty. The poverty rate amongst senior citizens is higher than the provincial or national levels. • Safety: Reported crime severity continues to drop in Mississauga. • Health and Wellness: Although Mississaugans are generally healthier, smoking rates have increased. • Belonging & Leadership: In 2009, the median charitable donation from Mississauga residents who claimed so on their income tax was $320, higher than the provincial median charitable donation of $310 and the national median charitable donation of $250 over the same period
"The launch of Mississauga's Vital Signs is a pivotal moment not just for the Foundation but for people and organizations in our community", says Eileen MacKenzie, Executive Director. "Providing information in a reader-friendly format encourages us all to know our community better, think about issue areas where we each want to take action and open up informed conversations about how we can make a strengthen our community."
Vital Initiatives
The Community Foundation of Mississauga is also pleased to announce that charitable organizations serving the community can now apply for a grant under the Vital Initiatives grant stream. Applicants must demonstrate that the project to be considered will benefit the Mississauga community, address an identified need within one or more of the issue areas outlined in the Mississauga's Vital Signs report and address the root causes of an issue with the ability to generate sustainable, positive change. One grant of $30,000 and one grant of $10,000 may be awarded in each of the ten Mississauga's Vital Signs issue areas and applications for a grant under this program must be received by November 4th, 2011.

The Community Foundation of Mississauga is a registered charitable public foundation that seeks to build community vitality by providing efficient, flexible donor services, grants to a broad range of community initiatives and leadership in understanding and responding to current and emergent community needs. Incorporated and registered in 2001, the Foundation is a member of the national network, Community Foundations of Canada and has experienced significant growth in endowed funds. The first grants from these funds were made in 2006. On Hunger Awareness Day, you are invited to do your part to help the growing number of hungry people in your community.
On June 1, 2010 we are asking individuals from groups across Mississauga to Brown Bag It for Hunger and donate your lunch money to support Mississauga Food Banks. A donation of just $10 will enable us to distribute $100 of food to the hungry in your community.
It is hard to imagine that there is hunger right here in our own backyards; however, in The Mississauga Food Bank Network, we serve 12,000 clients each month. Sadly, 47% of the Mississauga Food Bank's clients are children! Scientific evidence suggests that hungry children are less likely to become productive citizens, and that a child who is unequipped to learn because of hunger and poverty is more likely to be poor as an adult.
As a network of independent non-profit organizations, we receive no government funding, so we rely heavily on our local community for funding. Your support and participation will help spread the word that hunger here in our local community is unacceptable.
What are we asking? The Mississauga Food Bank Network is asking you to participate in Brown Bag It for Hunger in honour of Hunger Awareness Day on June 1, 2010. All you have to do is bring your lunch one day instead of buying it, and donate your lunch money to help feed those who are hungry in your community.

This Wednesday is Canada Day and Port Credit has a day-long party planned to celebrate Canada's 142nd birthday!
All Day: Take a Tour of Canada in the Village of Port Credit and visit the "Taste of Port Credit Restaurants!" Look for the flags of Canadian provinces that will be placed in front of the restaurants and stores which will all feature unique dishes throughout the day.

The City of Mississauga's 18 splash pads are now open for the season. The splash pads are open seven days a week and operate June through to September weather permitting.
