BRAMPTON, ON. (July 6, 2010) – The Peel Aboriginal Steering Committee is pleased to partner with Heritage Mississauga for its upcoming Aboriginal festival, MaanjidowinThe Gathering.” This free, family-friendly event takes place Saturday, July 17 from 6:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sunday, July 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This year’s Maanjidowin is being held at J.C. Saddington Park, 53 Lake St., Port Credit. The two-day celebration includes a variety of family activities and entertainment: a sunrise ceremony, a traditional Pow wow, Métis fiddlers and jiggers, Inuit throat singers, a marketplace, teaching circles, demonstrations, artists and a children’s circle. Aboriginal foods such as venison sausage, bison burgers and strawberries will be served to reflect traditional cuisine.

The theme of this year’s event is “Friendships that Transcend Time.” The event will bridge the past with the present and link “what was” with “what is.”

The festival will welcome many special guests including Chief Bryan LaForme, Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion, officials from the Métis Nation of Ontario and local political leaders.

Maanjidowin is organized by Heritage Mississauga, in partnership with the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, the Credit River Métis Council, the City of Mississauga, the Peel Aboriginal Steering Committee (PASC) through the Region of Peel and other community partners. The Region of Peel and its partners are proud to host this event and encourage all members of the community to attend.
