MiWay Five Service Plan Brings New Transitway Connection and Service Changes

Starting October 23, 2017, more improvements and changes are being made as part of the MiWay Five Service Plan (2016-2020). Customers can expect improved GO Transit connections, more frequent service and a new Mississauga Transitway connection on some routes.

“MiWay is continuing to make progress on the MiWay Five Service Plan,” said Geoff Marinoff, Director of Transit. “The plan allows for more frequent buses along main corridors and delivers more direct services. The plan is preparing for transit expansion as MiWay prepares for the completion of the Mississauga Transitway and the new light rail line along Hurontario Street.”

Major service improvements and changes for October 2017 include

305 Streetsville-Bancroft Revised morning routing to school due to low ridership. Route will no longer service north of Bancroft Drive
 314 Rick Hansen-Creditview Revised morning routing to school due to low ridership. Route will no longer service north of Britannia Road

MiWay Affordable Transportation Pilot and Senior One Dollar Cash Fare – Off-Peak Approved by City of Mississauga

Today at General Committee, MiWay’s proposed Affordable Transportation Pilot Program (ATPP) was approved in principle by Mississauga City Council and is on its way to becoming a permanent program in January 2018 along with the Senior One Dollar Cash Fare at off peak-times. Final approval is to follow at the October 11 Council meeting.

“Making the affordable transportation program permanent assists residents with low incomes and gives them better access to employment and services,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie “This program contributes to the City’s strategic goal of ensuring affordability and accessibility. The social and financial return on investment from this program benefits our City and helps keep our communities strong.”

“The two phases of the affordable transportation pilot helped us develop the program and make it effective,” said Geoff Marinoff, Director of Transit. “City of Mississauga and Region of Peel staff recommend that the phase two pilot becomes a permanent program for eligible Mississauga residents. The Region will continue to assess the eligibility and MiWay will administer the issuance of PRESTO cards. Financial responsibilities for subsidy and administrative costs will be covered by the Region. Upcoming Information Sessions About MiWay’s 2018 Service Plan

From September 25 to 30, MiWay is hosting public information sessions about its 2018 service plan. The sessions will provide the public with more information on how MiWay will increase service levels along major corridors and introduce more express services to power the grid network in 2018. The theme for the third year of the MiWay Five Transit Service Plan is “Powering the Grid.”

MiWay 5 is a five-year plan (2016-2020) that is shifting Mississauga’s transit system to a grid network that allows for more frequent buses along main corridors and delivers more direct services. The plan also optimizes the use of the Mississauga Transitway, which will be completed with the opening of Renforth station this fall.

MiWay Affordable Transportation Pilot Program Extended Five More Months

Staff Report Recommends Extension; No New Applicants To Be Accepted During Pilot

At General Committee today, City Council received a corporate report recommending an additional extension of the MiWay Affordable Transportation Pilot Program. The program is a partnership between the City and the Region of Peel. It was first introduced in May 2016 and extended in October 2016.

If approved by Council on April 12, transit riders who are already approved for the MiWay Affordable Transportation Pilot Program will continue to receive a 50 per cent discount on transit from May 1 to September 30, 2017.

“Program participants have told the City and Region that a permanent program is needed to address affordability of transit fares,” said Geoff Marinoff, Director, Transit, City of Mississauga. “The additional extension will allow low income Mississauga residents to continue to ride transit at a 50 per cent discount while we evaluate all phases of the pilot program.”

There are 1300 active users of the pilot program that are eligible for the extension. No new applicants will be approved during the five-month extension of the program.

Marinoff added that recommendations will be made to both Mississauga City Council and the Region of Peel through a full report in September 2017.

82 Per Cent of MiWay Customers Satisfied with Transit Service

For the third time, MiWay has received an overall customer satisfaction rating of 82 per cent in the bi-annual market research study done between November and December 2015.

“The high overall customer service rating shows us that we are on the right path as we focus on customer service and growth in ridership,” said Geoff Marinoff, Director of Transit. “The results tell us that our customers want more frequent and reliable service.
