Plans for Port Credit Walmart Shelved

The Mississauga News and Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey are both reporting that Walmart Canada has cancelled plans for a 84,000 square foot “urban” store on Lakeshore Rd. E. just west of Cawthra Rd. in Lakeview at the extreme eastern end of the Port Credit Business Improvement Area.

“Since 2006 we have opened more than 320 Walmart Supercentres, which have proven very popular with customers and are present in almost every market in the Canadian market. We are redirecting our focus and investment to improve our existing network of stores, distribution centres and ecommerce offer. As a result we will not proceed with plans to open the store at Lakeshore and Cawthra”. – Walmart Spokesperson

Lakeshore Road E. from Seneca Avenue to Cooksville Creek — including The District at Lakeview which was to house the retailer — was recently made a part of the Port Credit Business Improvement Area.

There were no immediate plans for the vacant retail space reported.

Proposed Policies First Step Toward Lakeview Waterfront Revitalization

Mississauga’s Planning and Development Committee yesterday received a staff report on the proposed Official Plan policies to support the implementation of the Inspiration Lakeview Master Plan.

The draft policies support the area’s development as an innovative, sustainable green community with a generous public realm made up of mostly mid-rise buildings. The area will be home to 20,000 people and 9,000 jobs over the next 30 years.

“The vision and planning for the Lakeview Waterfront is truly transformative,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “The city-building work we are doing now will help create a remarkable new destination for anyone choosing to live, work, visit and enjoy an unrivalled quality of life in Mississauga.”

The proposed policies identify:

  • the overall vision for the community
  • an innovative, green model community achieved through best practices
  • four distinct precincts, each with its own character
  • new parks and open spaces
  • new roads and transit corridors
  • cultural facilities, an innovation corridor and institutional campus
